Final Stats

Orono, ME - Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal 6:19 into overtime to lead the University of Maine field hockey team past Sacred Heart 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Orono, Maine. The game was the season-opener for both squads.

Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 6:22 into the game when Erin Reusch received a pass from Katie Flaherty on the left side of the goal and beat Sacred Heart goalie Ashley Del Greco (Merrimack, NH). For Reusch, it was her first collegiate goal.

Sacred Heart tied the game just over 12 minutes later. Junior Jenn Howley (North Salem, NY) fed Danielle Vasely (Hopwell Junction, NY) who was just in front of the goal cage. Vasely beat Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux to knot the scored at 1-1 at 18:41.

Maine had several great chances to end the game in regulation, including a late shot by Amy Zdrojesky that went just wide.

Legge ended the game for Maine on a great individual effort. She brought the ball down the field, beating several Pioneer defenders and Del Greco with a shot just in front of the goal cage to give the Black Bears the win in the season-opener.
