Fairfield, CT - Junior Carisa Eye (Nesconset, NY) scored the only goal of the game with 19:39 left in regulation as Sacred Heart hung on to defeat Fairfield, 1-0, in field hockey action Wednesday at University Field. SHU has now won two straight games for the first time this season.
Sacred Heart scored the game's only goal when Eye converted a cross from Katie Bohren (Hopwell Junction, NY), who sent the ball to the center of the circle with a pass from the left side. Eye wheeled and released a shot from eight yards that beat Fairfield goalkeeper Liz Thomas to the far corner. The goal was Eye's team leading 11th of the season.
The two teams played each other to a scoreless first half with the Stags holding a slight shot advantage in the opening 35 minutes. Three of those shots came on an exchange between two Fairfield players and Sacred Heart goalkeeper Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT). Molly Byrnes wrapped a pair of shots around an attempt from Amy Hosking midway through the first half. McIntire kicked away all the shots to keep the game scoreless.
In the second half, Fairfield came out with more pressure which helped it keep play on Sacred Heart's side of the field. Emily Janis had the Stags best chance when she secured a ball 30 yards out and broke in for a one-on-one chance against goalkeeper Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA). Mills came off her line and managed to stop Janis' shot inside the circle.
The Pioneers return to NEC play Sunday when they visit Quinnipiac. Game time is 12:00 pm.
