FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior Janice Rodriguez (Clinton, CT) scored her first goal of the season in the 78th minute on a feed from Allison Rojas (Manorville, NY) to help the Sacred Heart women's soccer team play to a 1-1 overtime draw against Monmouth University in a Northeast Conference game Sunday afternoon.
Andrea Lopez gave Monmouth (7-2-4 overall, 3-0-1 NEC) the lead in the seventh minute, beating SHU goalie Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) with an unassisted goal off a blast out front by Alessandra Detata that was blocked by the SHU defense. The game stayed that way until the intermission, though the Pioneers (0-9-4, 0-1-3) outshot Monmouth 4-3 in the period.
Rojas, who tallied her second assist of the year, made a pass through to Rodriguez late in the second half and the junior deposited it into the right corner to beat the diving Hawk netminder Lia Fierro.
In the first OT, both teams had a shot on goal. Monmouth got one from Andrea Lopez in the final minute of the period, forcing Reichelt to make a save to send it to the second overtime.
The second OT was all Hawks, as they registered four shots and two corner kicks. Reichelt came up big for the Pioneers midway through the second overtime, making a diving save on a shot by Mary Wilks.
The tie extended Monmouth's unbeaten streak to nine games.
