Oct. 26, 2007

Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 26, 2007) - The Sacred Heart field hockey team got second half goals from senior Danielle Vasely (Hopewell Junction, NY) and freshman Stephanie Fazio (Norwalk, CT) to beat visiting Robert Morris 2-0 and clinch a spot in the 2007 Northeast Conference Tournament next weekend. The shutout victory improves the Pioneers to 4-3 in conference play and 7-10 overall and gives them the tiebreaker for one of the remaining spots in field of four teams.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with the Pioneers dominating offensively with seven shots and eight penalty corners but no goals to show for their effort. The SHU offense carried it over to the second half and finally broke through in the 57th minute.

The Pioneers set-up for a penalty corner and Vasely was in position to redirect fellow senior Katie Bohren's (Hopewell Junction, NY) shot past RMU keeper Kate Dunlap for a 1-0 lead. SHU wasted little time in adding some insurance as Fazio made it 2-0 just over two minutes later. Fazio broke open in front and got a shot off the Dunlap made the initial save on. The freshman was able to clean up the rebound for her first career goal.

SHU goalies Kristen McIntire (Avon, CT) and Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, PA) each played a half and made a save in the shutout win. SHU held an 18-1 advantage on shots and a 15-4 edge on penalty corners.

The Pioneers close out the regular season at home on Sunday hosting New Hampshire at 2:30 pm.
