FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Mydori Saipale (Oxnard, CA) finished with a match-high 11 kills while collecting 12 digs, and sophomore Alex Bavasi (Flagstaff, AZ) had ten kills and just two attack errors to lead the Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24 and 30-21) sweep of visiting Manhattan College Wednesday night.
Sacred Heart, 5-10, made just one attack error in the opening game, winning it 30-22. Junior Lynne Principio, who finished the game with a team-high 16 digs, made six of them in the opening frame. Manhattan opened the game with a 5-1 lead. The Pioneers battled back, and with the game tied at 14, ran off the next five points on Principio serves to take control of the game. Diane Strutner tried to keep Manhattan in the game, making four kills and four digs.
The Pioneers took control of game two right from the start on four straight points off the serve of senior Christine Duffy (Massapequa, NY). Duffy helped SHU double up the Jaspers at 14-7 with a kill off the set of freshman Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA), who finished with a match-high 28 assists. The Pioneers opened the lead as wide as nine at 26-17 before putting the game away. The Jaspers, 3-15, finished the game with just five kills.
Game three was all SHU as Kidd-Kadlubek ran off seven straight points on her serve to open up an 18-6 advantage. With the score 23-10, Manhattan made a late run, using a 10-3 spurt to close the gap to 26-20. Principio match to an end with two straight points on her serve. SHU finished game three with 19 kills and just three errors, while making 17 digs.
Sherryta Stokes led Manhattan with eight kills in the match, followed by Strutner and Rita Welsh with six each. Ashley Watson led the Jaspers with 18 digs, while Cayla Roberts collected 21 assists.
