Worcester, MA - Junior Stephanie Couzin scored two goals and freshman Jocelyn Kratchmer scored the game-winner as the Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at the Hart Center.
Sacred Heart grabbed an early lead in the first period with a goal by freshman Kristina Hankins (Lexington, MA) at the 8:44 mark. Couzin would score at 13:41 to tie the teams up. Couzin stole the puck in the Pioneers' zone and went on a breakaway and fired the puck into the net.
The Crusaders took the lead when freshman Emily Henry scored a goal on the power play off an assist by Lisa Wilson. Henry blasted a shot from the blue line which deflected off a defender into the net. The goal was Henry's first collegiate goal. Sacred Heart responded with 6:03 left in the second when freshman Taryn Lapierre (Burrillville, RI) scored off a feed from sophomore Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) to tie the game again.
SHU seemed to grab the momentum late in the second when junior Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) found the back of the net with just 36 seconds left. However, with three seconds left Couzin tied the game at 3-3 with her second breakaway goal of the game.
Kratchmer scored the game-winner 1:17 into the third period, tallying her first collegiate goal. Senior Sam Murphy added a goal at the 10:55 mark for the 5-3 final score.
Freshman Monique Gallant made 29 saves to improve to 1-0-1 on the season. Senior Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) stopped 21 shots for the Pioneers. Holy Cross had 26 shots and went 1-3 on the power play, while the Pioneers had 32 shots and went 0-3.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday, November 27 when they host Union College. Game time at the Wonderland of Ice is 7:00 pm.
