FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Lisa Nowakowski (Rocky Hill, CT) scored the only goal of the game on a header off a corner kick by junior Brittney Dupee (Portland, ME) just 9:22 in to lead the Sacred Heart University women's soccer team to a 1-0 Northeast Conference win over visiting Central Connecticut Sunday afternoon. The victory clinched an NEC playoff berth for SHU (4-11-4, 4-2-3) as the #3 seed and sets up a rematch with #2 CCSU (9-8-2, 6-3-0) on Friday at Monmouth University, the tournament host.
By qualifying for the playoffs, Sacred Heart extends the longest post-season streak in the NEC. This marks the seventh straight year the Pioneers will appear in the NEC Tournament. SHU won the title in 2001.
The Pioneers controlled the midfield and backline for the entire game, allowing visiting Central few quality scoring chances. The best two chances of the day for the Blue Devils came off corner kicks.
Freshman Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made four saves for the Pioneers, while junior Erin Herd made four for the Blue Devils.
