
SHU Volleyball Falls to NYU, 3-1

New York, NY - Junior David Tener recorded 21 digs including a school record nine in the fourth game and senior captain Macnair Sillick led all players with 19 kills as New York University defeated Hay Division rival Sacred Heart University 3-1 in EIVA men's volleyball action Thursday night. The Violets (6-9, 1-1 Hay) defeated the Pioneers (3-5, 0-4 Hay) 30-18, 31-33, 30-23, 30-23 to move into third place in the Hay behind NJIT and Springfield College.
NYU was also led by a strong team effort on offense where four players had double-digit kills. Junior Jon Wintermeyer notched 12 kills and hit a team best .550 and sophomore Devin Zolnowski tacked on 10 kills with four blocks and seven digs. Freshman Eric Chakeen recorded his first double-digit kills match as a Violets by putting down 10 kills while hitting a career-best .389.
For the Pioneers, sophomore Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) had 17 kills while hitting .281 and senior John Breen (North Andover, MA) put up 43 assists. Freshman Scott Grandpre (East Greenwich, RI) had 11 kills while senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) put down nine winners in a losing effort for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers will host a tri-match with Endicott and Mount Olive Saturday at the Pitt Center. SHU will face Endicott in the first match at 10:00 a.m. with Endicott and Mount Olive playing at noon and Sacred Heart taking on Mount Olive in the final match of the day at 2:00 p.m.
