Bridgeport, CT - Freshman Jessica Riley scored the only goal of the game midway through the first period and goaltender Brianne McLaughlin stopped all 20 shots she saw as Robert Morris hung on for a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice.
Riley's goal came 11:43 into the first period. After a scrum in front of the Pioneer goal, Riley gathered the loose puck and jammed between the legs of Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) for the goal.
A scoreless second period saw both teams have opportunities to score. Sacred Heart had a chance to tie the game midway through the stanza when junior Sarah Hickman (Amherst, MA) had two excellent shots from the face-off circle stopped by Colonial goaltender Brianne McLaughlin. Then, with less then a minute left sophomore Alissa Dorman hit the goal post on a breakaway that could have given Robert Morris a two goal lead.
The Colonials controlled most of the play in the third, out-shooting the Pioneers 17-5 in the final stanza. SHU did have an opportunity with a power play in the final minute of the game, but couldn't find the back of the net with a shot.
Robert Morris out-shot Sacred Heart 42-20 for the game. Boulay made 41 saves in net to help the Pioneers stay in the game.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday night when they visit Elmira in the opening game of a two game central New York road trip. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm.
