FAIRFIELD, CT (March 2, 2007) - Sacred Heart junior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) scored a career-high five goals but the Brown Bears outscored the Pioneers 2-1 in overtime to post a 13-12 win Friday afternoon on Campus Field. Brown's Jesse Nunn netted her first goal of the season with 1:46 left in overtime to send the Bears home with the win, evening their record at 1-1. SHU had a chance to tie with 12 second left when senior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) was awarded an 8meter free position attempt but her shot was deflected and sailed wide leaving SHU just one goal short.
The Pioneers (1-1) jumped out in front first on an unassisted goal from sophomore Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) at 26:20. Brown and SHU traded goals over the next seven minutes including Ottey's first before the Bears rattled off a three-goal run. Bethany Buzzell scored the first two goals, the first coming just 12 second after Ottey's tally to make it 2-2. Buzzell added another and Meghan Markowski made it 4-2 Brown with 15:16 to on a free position goal.
Ottey got SHU back on the board at 13:26 with her third of the day followed by a hook-up from freshman Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) to Bubeck to knot it at 4-4 at he 7:09 mark. Brown again used a three-goal rally to grab control in the closing minutes of the half but Ottey struck again this time just before the halftime horn sounded to send her team into the break trailing 7-5.
The Pioneers used the momentum of Ottey's third marker to tie the game at 7-7 just 1:27 into the second half on scored by Bubeck and junior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY). After trading goals against Brown took a 10-8 advantage on a pair of scored from Molly McCaffrey at 19:13 and 18:33. SHU's Ottey and Bubeck gave the Pioneers back their first lead since the opening moments of the game scoring three straight for the Pioneers. Ottey notched her fourth at 8:43 followed by two by Bubeck at 5:42 and 2:04 to lead 11-10.
Brown answered with the tying score at 1:15 off the stick of Lauren Vitkus and the Bears looked like they would get the late win but Buzzell's goal was waived off with five seconds left for stepping in the circle. The two teams went to the six minute overtime session where Brown struck first scoring 1:18 seconds in on Markowski's second of the day. SHU answered at 3:48 with Ottey's fifth of the afternoon, unassisted.
Nunn delivered the game-winner off a feed from Buzzell at 1:46 and the Bears came up with the deflection on the Bubeck free position attempt to preserve the win.
Ottey's five goals were complemented by four goals and two assists from Bubeck. Montesarchio added a goal and an assist. In the cage, freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made 11 saves in taking the overtime loss.
For Brown (1-1), Buzzell and McCarthy each had four points on three goals and an assist each. Vitkus scored three goals and Markowski added two scores with an assist. Melissa King made just three saves in picking up the win.
The Bears out shot the Pioneers 28-19 while SHU turned it over 29 times and was just 14 of 23 on clear attempts.
Sacred Heart returns to the field on Saturday, March 10th when they host Holy Cross at 1:00 pm.
