FAIRFIELD, CT (March 23, 2007) - Sacred Heart senior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) scored four goals with an assist to lead the Pioneers to a 13-7 win over visiting Long Island University in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon. With the five point afternoon, Bubeck surpassed the 100 point mark for her career with 80 career goals and 23 career assists.
The Pioneers (2-3, 1-0 NEC) wasted little time in cracking the scoring column as junior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) took the opening draw control and race in for her first of three goals on the day just 11 seconds into play. The two teams traded goals in the opening 10 minutes before Bubeck notched her second goal of the day at the 20:13 mark that started off a 5-1 Pioneer run over the next 15 minutes to take a 7-3 lead.
The Blackbirds (1-5, 0-1 NEC) stole some of the momentum back just before half, as Jackie McCormick scored off a feed from Amy Rizzo with just 22 seconds left to send the game into the break, 7-4 SHU. The Pioneers held a 19-8 advantage on shots in the first 30 minutes but LIU hit on four of their eight attempts while goalkeeper Kimberly Campbell collected eight saves to keep her team in the game.
SHU increased their lead to 9-4 by the 21 minute mark on scores by Salamone and freshman Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY). Rizzo pulled the Blackbirds to within 9-5 with her second goal of the day at 13:05, unassisted, but SHU put the game away with a 3-0 run over a three and a half minute stretch.
Sophomore Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) scored from fellow sophomore Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) at 8:13. Montesarchio won the draw and scored at 7:23 from teammate Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY). Bubeck finished the rally off with her four goals of the day, unassisted at 4:43. Montesarchio finished off the SHU scoring with her second goal with 2:37 left.
Sacred Heart doubled up Long Island on shots, 32-16 and also held a 15-7 edge in draw controls. The Blackbirds struggled clearing the ball, managing just 11 of 21 successful clears while turning the ball over 18 times. SHU held the ground ball edge, 15-10.
Junior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) added a goal and two assists to the stat sheet. Freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made five saves in earning her second win of the year.
