Fairfield, CT - Junior Jon Wintermeyer rang up 10 kills en route to a .692 hitting percentage and Eric Chakeen and Brian Vilven each hit over .400 to lead New York University to a 3-0 win over Sacred Heart in EIVA men's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Pitt Center. The Violets prevailed by scores of 30-22, 30-24 and 30-28.
The Violets hit .359 as a team for the match, recording at least a .300 percentage in each game. Wintermeyer had 10 winners in 13 attempts with just one error. Chakeen recorded eight kills in 13 chances with only two errors for a .462 mark while Vilven hit five for 11 with no errors for a .455 percentage. Sophomore Devin Zolnowski also had eight kills and a game high six digs. The Violets combined for 10 blocks as a team.
Sacred Heart was led by freshman Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) who hit .643 for the match with ten kills in 14 chances. Senior Mike Ivers (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore Barry Smith (Shelton, CT) each had 10 kills as well. The Pioneers hurt themselves with 16 service errors in the match.
All three games were close to start with the Violets holding a slight edge midway through the game and the Pioneers never able to close the gap. In the first game, NYU held a small lead all the way through, eventually building a 26-22 edge before running off the final four points of the game. Wintermeyer had six kills in the opening game as the Violets hit .419.
The second game went much like the first with the Violets opening up leads of 16-11 and 19-13 and holding the six point edge throughout. Zolonowski led the Violets with six kills while the Pioneers gave points away on seven service errors.
NYU started quickly in the final game, jumping out to leads of 10-6 and 17-11. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 17-13 before the Violets ran off four straight points to make it 21-13. NYU built a 28-25 lead before SHU made a late run to draw within 29-27. However, a Pioneer service error on match point gave the Violets the victory.
The Pioneers are back in action Thursday night when they host New Haven in an EIVA contest. Game time at the Pitt Center is 7:00 pm.
