WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell behind 8-1 Friday afternoon at Monmouth University but a strong second half rally fell short as the Pioneers dropped their second-straight Northeast Conference contest, 11-8, to the Hawks. The loss drops the Pioneers record to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the league while the first-place Hawks improve to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in NEC play.
The Hawks got out of the gates with a 3-0 lead by the 16 minute mark on goals by Carolyn Raveia, Ashley Waldman and Megan Nutter. The Pioneers lone goal of the first half came from their go-to-player Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) finishing a feed from Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) to cut the MU lead to 3-1 at the 11:34 mark. Waldman scored her second goal of the game off a free position to boost the MU lead back to 4-1 one minute later and the Hawks ended the first half when they executed a perfect give-and-go as Kaitlyn Robinson scored on an assist from Katie Degen with less than a minute to go before halftime.
Monmouth didn't wait long to get on the board in the second half as Waldman scored off a Degen assist 17 seconds in followed 12 seconds later by Nutter to boost the Hawks' lead to 7-1. MU won the first five draw controls of the second half as their scoring barrage continued when Waldman scored an unassisted goal one minute later to up the lead to 8-1 with 28:18 left in the game.
Bubeck halted the run and scored off a free position opportunity to cut the lead to 8-2 with 24:33. Ottey tallied an unassisted score at 23:29 to pull SHU within five. A Monmouth goal at 21:50 pushed the lead to 9-3 before the Pioneers struck again.
Sacred Heart's Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY) scored off an assist from Amanda Williams () to trim the lead to 9-4 with 12 minutes left in the game. Freshman Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) then scored off a free position chance to cut the MU lead to 9-5. A MU free position goal at the 10:45 mark of the game gave the Hawks a 10-5 lead before one more Pioneer rally.
Bubeck answered with a free position goal of her own thirty seconds later. SHU cut it to three at 10-7 as Hauser scored off a scrum in front of the net with seven minutes left in the game. Junior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) the Pioneers to within 10-8 after going the length of the field and shot low on MU goalie Monica Johnson at the 3:30 mark but that would be the extent of the Sacred Heart run Monmouth's Brennan added some insurance by going around the net and bouncing a goal in to boost the lead back to three at with two and a half minutes left.
SHU's Bubeck led the team in scoring with three goals followed by a pair from Hauser. Freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made a career-best 17 saves in taking the loss.
The Pioneer road trip continues Sunday afternoon when SHU stops at Mount St. Mary's for a 1:00 pm start.
