
Softball Hosts Twinbill with Iona Tuesday

Setting the Scene... The Pioneers host Iona in a non-conference midweek twinbill Tuesday at 3:00 pm. at Pioneer Park. The game will be broadcast on SacredHeartPioneers.com SHU is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday which kept them in the hunt for the final spot in the Northeast Conference playoffs. SHU starts the week with an 11-19 record and a 5-5 mark in league play.
Pioneers Sweep FDU... Junior Megan Spehar tossed a four hitter with 10 strikeouts and scored four runs of her own and senior Caitlin Carroll added four RBI to lead Sacred Heart to a crucial doubleheader sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson in Northeast Conference softball action Saturday at Pioneer Park. SHU won by scores of 8-1 and 6-3.
Pioneers Last Week... The Pioneers won three out four games this week, splitting a twinbill with St. John's and sweeping a pair from FDU on the weekend. The duo of Megan Spehar and Bethany Lemenager have become a very effective combination in the circle for the Pioneers as they combined for 24 strikeouts while allowing just seven runs in four games over the week.
Last Year vs Iona... Freshman Sarah Stack had the big hit and sophomore Megan Spehar turned in a shutout on the mound as Sacred Heart earned a 6-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader, after falling in the opener 3-2, against Iona last year in New Rochelle.
Scouting The Gaels... Iona has several strong hitters in their lineup. The attack is led by Valerie Laschen who has a .329 batting average. Laura Stott has a team leading 17 RBI. Stacy Moyer is hitting .319 for the year. Laschen and Angie Ortiz each have 13 runs batted in along with a team leading four homeruns. Becky Riccitelli has been the Gaels best pitcher, with six wins from the circle with a 3.70 ERA.
SHU Duo in the Circle... The Pioneers ace is picther is junior Megan Spehar. The righthander, who is also a good offensive player, is 8-8 on the season in 16 starts, pitching 103.2 innings. She is averaging more than one strikeout per inning. Senior Bethany emenager has solidfied her self as SHU's No. 2 starter, allowing just four earned runs in her last four games, going 2-2 with 22 strikeouts in that span.
