Designated hitter John Romano had three hits and three RBI, leading a 14-hit barrage as the Central Connecticut State baseball team defeated the Pioneers 15-3 in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
SHU started Chris Howard (3-3) was knocked out in the fourth inning, allowing eight runs. The normally sharp senior struggled with his command, walking two, hitting three batters and throwing three wild pitches. Central scored six times in the fourth inning, opening up an 11-2 lead.
The Pioneers (8-13, 0-1) were led by junior Jovan Rodriguez with three hits, while freshman Steve Tedesco had a pair of hits. Bobby McKee drove in two of the three Pioneer runs.
The loss was the fourth straight for Sacred Heart. CCSU improved to 9-4 with the victory. Ken Kerskie (3-1) picked up the win for the Blue Devils.
