FAIRFIELD, CT (April 5, 2007) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team got three goals apiece from senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) and junior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) and withheld a late Wagner rally to posted a 12-10 Northeast Conference victory on Campus Field Thursday afternoon. The Seahawks outscored the Pioneers 6-3 in the second half but the Pioneers kept Wagner out of their offensive end over the last six minutes of play to claim victory.
Sacred Heart's (4-6, 2-3 NEC) Salamone got the Pioneers on the board first with an unassisted marker a minute and a half into play. After a Wagner goal at 26:13, SHU put together a 4-0 run over a 10 minute stretch to lead 5-1. Salamone tacked on her second of the day to start the rally at 23:35 with Ottey following with her first a minute later.
Salamone scored her third off a feed from senior Brianne Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) at 15:47. Ottey set up the next goal with a feed to a cutting Bubeck at 13:21 to finish off the run at 13:21. Wagner's Jessica Ellis cut it to 5-2 with an unassisted score off a lose ball in front but SHU tacked on two more to lead 7-2 with just under 10 to go in the half.
Sophomore Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored off a feed from Bubeck followed by freshman Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) scoring her first of the afternoon at 9:47. The Pioneers and Seahawks traded goals at 7:07 and 3:49 before Wagner's Jenelle Spatarella buried a feed from Jessica Ellis just before the break to cut the SHU lead to 8-4 at the half.
Bubeck gave the Pioneers back the momentum with just under a minute gone in the second half, scoring on an 8meter free position shot. Wagner quickly stole back the momentum 25 seconds later on a Janine Bright score to ignite a three-goal rally. Cara Gonzalez scored back-to-back markers at 27:36 and 21:51 to pull the Seahawks within two, 9-7.
The Pioneers pushed their lead back to four, 11-7, with goal by Ottey from the free position at 20:23 and sophomore Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) at 19:04. Wagner once again rallied with a three-goal spurt to get within one. Scores at 15:44 by Ellis and 15:01 by Krista Malayter cut the lead to 11-9. Teri Noll picked up her second of the game to get her team to within 11-10, scoring a free-position goal at 13:52.
Ottey extended the Pioneers lead back to 12-10 at the 10:05 mark, scoring off a long pass from junior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY). After a pair of saves by freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) on Wagner's next two possessions, the Pioneers forced a turnover at the 6:00 minute mark and never looked back. SHU's Jessica McDonough (Carmel, NY) stripped Janice Bright and successfully cleared the ball, keeping the Seahawks on their side of the field the rest of the way.
In addition to Ottey and Salamone's six combined goals, Bubeck finished with two goals and two assists while Hauser added two scores and a helper. Wagner turned away 10 shots in cage for the win.
Wagner's (2-7, 1-3 NEC) Ellis picked up three goals with an assist while Spatarella had a goal and an assist. Alex Johnston and Amy Jones split time in goal combining for six saves.
The Pioneers wrap-up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday, April 10th traveling to Marist for a 4:00 pm start.
