Maine Downs SHU in Women's Hockey Opener, 6-1

Orno, ME - Vanessa Vani and Jordan Colliton each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the University of Maine over Sacred Heart, 6-1, in season-opening women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Maine scored three goals in the first 14 minutes of the first period to take control of the game. Madelene Erickson scored 2:36 into the game on a feed from Colliton. Vani and Colliton followed that score up with two markers of their own.
Freshman Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) got the Pioneers on the board with 1:55 left in the first period off a feed from Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ). It was Fontaine's first career goal.
Lexie Hoffmeyer scored 3:15 into the second period to reopen a three goal lead for the BlackBears. jenna Ouellette and Robyn Law added goals in the third period for Maine. Senior Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) made 23 saves in goal for Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday when they open a weekend series at Vermont. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm.
