Bridgeport, CT - Freshmen Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) and Taryn Lapierre (Burillville, RI) each scored two goals and sophomore Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) added a goal and three assists to lead Sacred Heart to a 7-2 win over Southern Maine Wednesday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice.
Sacred Heart dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the Huskies 52-22. Fontaine and Lapierre each found the back of the net in the first period to give the Pioneers an early lead. Dunlop had an assist on Lapierre's goal. Meagan Irving found the back of the net for the Huskies midway through the period to make it 2-1 SHU after one.
Sacred Heart scored five straight goals in the second and third period to blow the game open. Lapierre and Dunlop hooked up again just 31 seconds into the second to make it 3-1. Freshman Tatiana Klinoff (Concord, MA) scored her first collegiate goal at the 11:12 mark to give the Pioneers a three goal lead. Dunlop notched her goal with 2:54 left in the second off a feed from Jaclyn Rideout (Wilmington, MA). The Pioneers led 5-1 after two periods.
Fontaine tallied her second goal on a slapshot 1:09 into the final period. It was the rookie's team lading 14th goal of the year. At the 8:10 mark, Dunlop put a shot on net that was stopped by Huskies goaltender Emily Barrett. However, Rideout came swooping in to slam the loose rebound inside the post for a goal. Junior Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ) also had an assist on the play, one of two helpers for her on the day.
Regina Wilson scored for Southern Maine with 11:12 left in the game to cap the scoring. However, it was too little too late as senior Sarah Perry (Sudbury, MA) made 20 saves for the Pioneers to earn her fifth victory of the season. Despite giving up seven goals, Barrett had a strong game in net, stopping 45 shots in a losing effort.
The Pioneers are back in action Friday night when they host Cortland State. Face-off at the Wonderland of Ice is set for 7:00 pm.
