Marshon Brooks scored a career-high 30 points, 24 of them in the first half, to help Providence College defeat the Sacred Heart men's basketball team 111-87 in a non-conference game Thursday night.
A Joey Henley layup with 11:17 to go in the first half had the Pioneers ahead 16-14, but the Friars went on 23-7 run over the next four minutes to lead 37-23. Providence was 8-12 from the field during the spurt.
The Pioneers turned it over 15 times in the half, leading to 20 Providence points, Perhaps the most damaging was with just under four seconds left when the Pioneers had the ball with a chance for the last shot, turned it over on a bad pass and Brooks drained a three to put the Friars up 54-37 at the intermission.
Providence hit just one of its first nine shots, but finished the half canning 19 of the next 30 (63 percent).
Henley had 18 points for the third straight game for the Pioneers, while Chauncey Hardy also had a season-high 18. Corey Hassan added 15, including 3 of 5 shooting form beyond the arc. Freshman Shane Gibson chipped in ten.
The Pioneers actually out rebounded Providence, 42-38, led by Gibson with nine and Ryon Howard with eight.
Providence finished the game shooting 54 percent (41-76), including 43 percent from three (13-30).
