Feb. 29, 2008

Final Stats

FAIRFIELD, CT (February 29, 2008) - Sacred Heart's Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) scored with 1:33 left to tie the game at 12-12 but Fairfield's Erin Rigby tallied the game-winner just 26 seconds later to send the Stags home with a 13-12 win at Campus Field Friday afternoon. The Pioneers had one last chance to tie but Hauser's free position attempt with 37 seconds left hit the post and the Stags killed off the remaining time for the win.

Fairfield (1-1) wasted little time in getting their offense started, scoring 58 seconds to play on a Kristen Coleman unassisted marker. The Pioneers (0-2) answered with a four-goal run over a nine minute span to open a 4-1 lead with 17:18 left. Junior Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) started it off with her third of the season off a feed from fellow junior Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY). Freshman Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY), senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) and Williams all followed with 8meter goal for the early three score edge.

The Stags ended the streak at 15:40 on a Rebecca White from Abbey Goodwin hook-up but SHU's Cori Horelik (South Windsor, CT) made it 5-2 at 11:17 with her first goal of the year. Fairfield went a scoring run of their own over the next 10 minutes and knotted the game at 5-5 with 1:53 to go. The Pioneers went to the locker room up 6-5 thanks to a senior Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) goal with 15 second left in the half.

Kristen Coleman and Rebecca White gave the Stags their first lead, 7-6, just over three minutes into the second half on back-to-back markers before Hauser answered for SHU at 26:33. The Stags lead hit two goals once again as Coleman buried a pair of unassisted goals at 26:03 and 21:16 for a 9-7 advantage.

SHU answered the bell again and got goals from seniors Salamone and Ottey, both on free position shots, to tie the game a 9-9 with 11:49 to play. Anther two-goal spurt by Fairfield left Sacred Heart chasing a 11-9 deficit with 7:40 left but the Pioneers continued to fight back. Ottey scored her third 8meter goal at 6:59 and after another Stag goal made it 4-for-4 on free position attempts at 2:05 to cut it to 12-11.

Hauser brought the Pioneers all the back at the 1:33 mark when the Pioneers setup for yet another free position attempt. Williams was awarded the attempt but elected to pass to a cutting Hauser on the left who deposited her second of the afternoon to knot it up at 12-12. The Stags won the ensuing draw and set up for the go-ahead score when Rigby got loose in front and scored her only goal of the day at 1:07.

SHU took the draw and set-up for their tying attempt and were awarded two more free position shots. Salamone's attempt at 50 second sailed wide but Hauser drew a foul and set up at 37 second, seeing her attempt carom off the right post as the Stags caroled the loose ball and were able to run out the clock.

The Pioneers finished the day seveon-of-12 on 8meter attempts, let by Ottey who also added an assist to her totals. Salamone, Hauser and Williams all scored twice while Montesarchio added a pair of assists. SHU goalie Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) was outstanding making 15 saves in the cage.

Fairfield got four goals from Coleman and a three goal, one assist day from White in the win. Lauren Chatnik made seven saves to earn the win in goal.

Sacred Heart is right back in action on Sunday afternoon hosting Villanova at 12:00 pm.
