
Spehar, Russell Earn All-NEC Honors

Fairfield, CT - Senior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) and freshman Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) have been named Second Team All-Northeast Conference in a vote of the league's coaches. The awards were announced at the annual banquet on the eve of the NEC Softball Tournament Thursday night at Long Island University.
Spehar, one of the best all-around players to come through the SHU program, earned her award as a utility player. She led the Pioneers in runs scored with 20 and also had 11 RBI and 30 hits. In the circle, she posted nine wins with a 2.68 ERA. She had 117 strikeouts in 162 innings. Spehar finished her Sacred Heart career second in school history with 416 career strikeouts along with 31 victories.
In her first season as a Pioneer Russell took the Northeast Conference by storm, turning in a 7-2 record with a 1.56 ERA in conference games. She led the team and was second in the league with 14 wins overall with a 2.73 ERA. She won three NEC Pitcher of the Week awards and was twice named the NEC Rookie of the Week.
Sacred Heart finished the season with 23 wins, a Division I school record.
