The Pioneers rebounded from a tough overtime loss on Tuesday to defeat the Lakers 5-1 Friday night in Oswego, NY. Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) netted her fifth short-handed goal of the season and Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA) added a goal and two assists in the victory. Amanda Nagel (Greenwood, MN) made 27 saves as the Pioneers outshot the Lakers 32-28.
Sacred Heart (9-11-2) struck first on a power play tally from freshman Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT). Oswego (5-7-1) tied the game on Kendra Lemire's first goal of the season with assists from Ashley Meyers and Jenna Kirkwood. Fontaine notched her short-handed marker with just 26 seconds remaining in the first period to give Sacred Heart a 2-1 advantage.
Just 1:31 into the second frame Jamie Mey (Middletown, RI) extended the Pioneer lead with her second goal of the season. Whitney Dziama posted her eighth goal of the year later in the second period with an assist from Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) to bring the SHU lead to 4-1 at the second intermission.
Taryn Lapierre (Oakland, RI) scored the only goal of the third stanza as Kate Dunlop (Flesherton, ON) and Kristina Feltz (Edison, NJ) each earned an assist. Sacred Heart held Oswego to 0-5 on the power play and the Pioneers capitalized once in four opportunities with the extra skater.
The Pioneers will look for the sweep as they skate with the Lakers again tomorrow night in the series finale. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Oswego, NY.
