EMMITSBURG, MD - Starting backcourt mates Jeremy Goode and Jean Cajou combined to pour in 47 points and lead the Mount St. Mary's (9-9, 4-3) men's basketball team to a 78-67 win over visiting Sacred Heart University (6-11, 3-4) in a Northeast Conference game Saturday afternoon.
Sacred Heart came out of the gates hot and took a 17-10 lead after a three-point play by junior guard Chauncey Hardy (Middletown, CT) with 12:16 left in the first half. A Mehmet Sahan jumper with 5:46 to go in the period kept that margin intact at 31-24. The Mountaineers took advantage of six Pioneer turnovers the rest of the half and went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 33-33 at the intermission.
The Mountaineers hit eight of their first 12 shots to start the second half and built a double-digit lead at 50-39. The Pioneers never got closer than nine the rest of the way, The Mount shot 65 percent in the second half (15-23) and 12-14 from the free throw line (12-14).
The Pioneers shot nearly 50 percent for the game but struggled from long range, missing their first ten three-point attempts and finishing two of 15.
