Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart women's soccer
team finished off the 2009 season with a 5-1 triumph over Mount St.
Mary's on senior day. Junior Lindsay Elliott
(Orange, CT) led the SHU attack, netting a career high three
goals. Senior Mary Dick (Massapeuqa,
NY) converted on a penalty kick to notch her first goal of
2009. Fellow senior Ashley Testani
(Monroe, CT) also got into the act contributing an assist in her
final collegiate game.
Sacred Heart (8-9-1, 4-5-1 NEC) dominated the first period
outshooting the Mountaineers 15-4. The Pioneers jumped out to
an early 1-0 advantage as Elliott slammed home a cross from Samantha Kee
(Haskell, NJ) for her first goal in the seventh minute. The
Pioneers would have numerous scoring chances put could not find the
second goal in the first half, hitting both the crossbar and the
post in the first 45 minutes.
Mount St. Mary's (6-11-2, 4-5-1 NEC) would tie the game six
minutes into the second half on an unassisted marker from Regina
Potter. Elliott and SHU would respond just 2:41 later as the
junior forward ripped a shot into the left side of the net from 20
yards out. Sacred Heart would build a 3-1 lead in the 73rd
minute as Dick notched a penalty kick goal, beating the keeper to
the lower left corner. Elliott would put the finishing
touches on her hat trick 3:44 later on a header from a Jasmine
Rodriguez (Clinton, CT) cross. Less than a minute later
the Pioneer surge would continue as Kee made it 5-1 on a good
through ball from Testani (Monroe, CT). Junior goalkeeper Meghan
Reichelt (Selden, NY) made four saves in the game and stopped
two Mountaineer break aways in the second half.
The Pioneers finish the season with a 8-9-1 record, 4-5-1 in the
NEC, and 4-3-1 at home at Campus Field.
