FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Joey Henley (Kent, WA) was a perfect nine of nine from the floor, finishing with 22 points, to lead the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team to an 83-61 win over visiting Monmouth University. The win was the third straight for the Pioneers and, coupled with an LIU loss, moved the Pioneers into third place in the Northeast Conference standings at 11-6.
Sacred Heart, 14-13, opened up a 13-4 lead in the first 4:30 of the game, thanks in large part to a pair of Corey Hassan treys. The Pioneers used that start to take a 42-32 lead at the intermission. Hassan. Hassan finished the half with eight of his 18 points, while Henley had 13 in the period.
Hassan and junior Ryan Litke (Windsor, CT) each nailed a pair of threes in the first six minutes of the second half to help the Pioneers extend the lead to 62-42. A Hassan jumper with 11:40 left in the game gave SHU its biggest lead at 68-42.
Monmouth, 7-22 and 5-11, was led by Will Campbell with 20 points, while Alex Nunner had 13 and Mike Myers Keitt had 12.
With his 9-9 performance today, Henley has now made 16 consecutive field goals in a span of three games and is shooting 61.9 percent this season. Hassan was 4-8 from three-point range and over his last three games is 13 of 25 from beyond the arc.
The Pioneers have one Northeast Conference game left to play, Thursday at St. Francis (NY). A win, along with a loss by LIU in one of its final two road games, ensures the Pioneers will be seeded no lower than third in the upcoming conference tournament.
