Box Score The Red Flash scored twice in the first half to defeat the SHU
women's soccer team 2-0 Friday night at Campus Field. The
Pioneers outshot SFU 17-9 overall but could not find the finishing
touch and were held scoreless for a second consecutive game.
The Red Flash secured a third straight victory and now sit in
alone in second place in the Northeast Conference standings.
Saint Francis (PA) (11-4-1, 5-2-0 NEC) found the back of the net
on its first shot of the game 5:10 after the opening whistle.
Reigning adidas/NEC player of the week Tesa McKibben had her
first attempt blocked by the SHU defense but slotted home the
rebound for her 13th marker of 2010. The Pioneers controlled
possession the majority of the half but could not find an
equalizer. Chelsea Traurig extended the Red Flash advantage
to 2-0 with just 1:30 on the clock as she beat a defender to a
fifty-fifty ball and beat the keeper one-on-one.
Sacred Heart (7-5-4, 3-2-2 NEC) had a pair of golden
opportunities to chip away at the deficit early in the second half.
Jen Mulvey (Manalapan, NJ) sent in a ball to Samantha Kee
(Haskell, NJ) but the junior forward had her shot stopped by SFU
netminder Lauren Fearer. Fearer finished the night with six
saves to pick up her seventh win of the season. Kee found
herself alone in front at the 28:10 mark after a low cross from
Ashley Moore (Levittown, NY) made its way through the box.
However, Kee put the shot directly at Fearer who was equal to
the task again, maintaining her shutout.
Haleigh Dunyon came within inches of making it a 3-0 affair for
the Red Flash with 15:00 minutes to play in regulation but her low
shot bounced off the left post. Saint Francis (PA) held on
down the stretch to earn the 2-0 victory on a cold, windy night in
Fairfield, CT.
The women's soccer team returns to action this Sunday, October 24
for the final home game of the season. Sacred Heart takes on
Robert Morris on senior day as the senior class will be honored
before the 1:00 pm kick-off.
