The Pioneer women's bowling team went 6-3 in the first Northeast Conference meet of the season this weekend and sits in fifth place in the standings, one game back of a four-way tie for first. Freshman Nicole Trudell (Coventry, RI) paced the Pioneers throughout the event, bowling all nine games and posting a 221 average. Savannah Zientara (Lewiston, NY) ranked second on the squad with a 203 average over eight total games.
Sacred Heart (16-6, 6-3 NEC) started the weekend on Saturday with an 883-844 victory over the host team, #9 Kutztown. Zientara shot a 265 to lead SHU in the second game of the afternoon, a 965-958 win over Saint Francis (PA). Sacred Heart had a game slip through its grasp in the third match of the day despite a 264 from Trudell. The Pioneers left two open frames in the tenth as the anchor for #15 St. Francis (NY) doubled in her last frame as SHU dropped a 903-895 decision. The Pioneers responded to that disappointment with their best game of the meet in a 1104-874 rout of Saint Peter's. But Sacred Heart ended the afternoon on a down note by falling to #8 New Jersey City, 1011-933.
The Pioneers would suffer their last defeat of the meet in the first game of day two as the top ranked team in the country, Fairleigh Dickinson, rolled to a 1121-884 win over SHU. Sacred Heart had three bowlers over the 200 mark as Trudell, Zientara, and Jacqueline Willy (Clarence, NY) led the team to a 1094-874 victory over Monmouth. Trudell notched a 268 as the Pioneers won back-to-back matches with a 1037-974 triumph against #13 Adelphi. Sacred Heart rounded out the meet with a 942-880 win over Long Island.
The SHU women's bowling team returns to action next weekend as they travel to the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore for a tournament hosted by the second ranked team in the nation.
