Box Score Pioneer Vision Post Game Report (Video)
Samantha
Kee (Haskell, NJ) found the only goal of the game early in the
second and senior goalkeeper Meghan
Reichelt (Selden, NY) made six saves as the Pioneer women's
soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Army Friday night at Campus
Field. Leigh
Dogmanits (Walnutport, PA) provided the assist on the goal that
earns the Pioneers their first opening game win in eight years.
Sacred Heart (1-0-0) had the better scoring chances in the first
half and outshot the Black Knights 6-3 in the first 45 minutes.
Dogmanits nearly put the Pioneers on top seven minutes into
the game after a corner kick from Alex Mack
(Freeport, ME). The senior captains header was caught
awkwardly by Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter to keep the game
tied.
Army (0-1-0) responded with a counter attack one minute after
the Pioneers previous effort as Reichelt was forced to make her
first save on a long shot Joey Molacek. SHU almost broke the
ice at the 21:00 mark as Heather
Quevillion (Dayville, CT) hit a one-timed volley from a cross
just wide of the cage. Lindsay
Elliott (Orange, CT) had a chance of her own at the end of
the first half but her headed effort also drifted off target
to send the two teams into the locker room still knotted at
zero.
The Pioneers posted the first goal of the game, and of the 2010
season, on a set piece play 11 minutes into the second half.
Dogmanits swung in a corner kick that Kee struck with perfect
timing on a low volley that found the left side of the net, giving
SHU a 1-0 advantage. Army had a golden opportunity to
equalize but Reichelt robbed Black Knight striker Kim An, who
ripped a one timer at point blank range. Sacred Heart
had a chance to extend the lead with 15:00 remaining as Lucy
Gildein made a solid run up the right side. The freshmen
nearly threaded a pass through the Army defense but the Black
Knights were able to clear the ball and end the attack.
Army would keep the pressure on late as Molacek struck a one
timer at goal but Reichelt was positioned well to make the
stop. The Pioneer defense would stand tall in the final ten
minutes and keep the Black Knights away from the front of the net
to secure the victory.
The women's soccer team returns to action this Sunday, August
22nd as they welcome the Providence Friars of the Big East to
Campus Field. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
