FAIRFIELD, CT (September 29, 2010) - The Sacred Heart women's
volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the Northeast Conference with a
3-0 win over Quinnipiac Wednesday night in the William H. Pitt
Center. The Pioneers ran their winning streak to
seven-straight as they improve to 12-4 overall on the season.
The Pioneers (12-4, 2-0 NEC) battled back from early deficits in
each of the three sets to stay perfect in the Pitt Center this
season, winning their fifth-straight on their home court.
Freshman Dianis
Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) led all Pioneers with 12
kills to go with four digs, a block and a service ace.
Junior Ashlyn Trimble
(Temecula, CA) had a solid all-around night with nine kills, six
digs, three aces, an assist and a block.
Senior Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) ran the
offense finishing with 29 assists (.414%) and six digs. The
Pioneers hit .247 (41k-18e-93att) as a team in the win.
The Bobcats (2-13, 0-2 NEC) had early success in each set, ran
out to a 4-0 lead in the first, a 3-1 lead in set two and a 4-2
lead in the third. The Pioneers proved too much to handle
however, as SHU broke open a 15-14 game with an 8-0 run en
route to ouscoring the Bobcats 10-2 down the stretch to win the
first set.
In set two, SHU led 14-12 but used a 9-2 run started with a pair
of Mercado kills. Up 23-17, SHU closed it out with an ace
from Trimble and back-to-back kills from Maile
Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Mercado. The third
set saw an early 5-5 tie before SHU ran off four-straight points
including consecutive kills from Trimble to take the lead for
good. The Pioneers never let the Bobcats closer then three
points (18-15) the rest of the way to the win.
Sacred Heart is back on the road for a pair of Northeast
Conference match-ups this weekend in Brooklyn, NY. The
Pioneers take on the St. Francis (NY) Terriers this Saturday at
2:00 pm and the Long Island Blackbirds on Sunday at 1:00 pm
