Box Score HAMDEN, CT (April 1, 2011) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell behind 9-0 in the first half and couldn't recover falling at rival Quinnipiac 14-5 Friday afternoon in Northeast Conference action. The Pioneers didn't get on the scoreboard until 3:05 in the first half and fell behind 11-1 in the early minutes of the second half digging to deep a hole to climb out of in falling to 2-8 and 1-2 in the NEC on the year.
The Bobcats (5-3, 4-0 NEC) outshot the Pioneers (2-8, 1-2 NEC) 17-6 in the first half and forced 16 SHU turnovers en route to their 9-1 lead at the half. Marissa Caroleo scored six goals to lead QU.
Lianne Toomey started the Quinnipiac scoring spree almost four minutes in on an 8-meter attempt and it was all Bobcats from there. Laura Iannotti and Caroleo each scored three times in the first half as the Bobcats led 9-0 with 4:41 to play in the half. SHU finally found some offense as junior Kate Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) scored from 8-meters with 3:05 left before the break.
QU tacked on two more goals to take a 10-goal lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Chelsea Guerrera and Caroleo scored at 27:17 and 26:15 to put the Bobcats up 11-1. The Pioneers put up goals at 23:10, from freshman Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY), and 21:34, from senior Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, NY) to cut the lead to 12-3, but QU would tack on two more goals while holding SHU off the scoreboard until the eight minute mark.
Kmiotek and Russo each scored a pair for the Pioneers in the loss.
SHU is back in action on Friday, April 8th at Bryant.
