Pioneers Complete Comeback, Beat Holy Cross 5-4 in OT

Box Score

(Worcester, MA) – Lindsay Kasten (Fair Haven, NJ) scored 2:01 into overtime to lift the Sacred Heat Pioneer field hockey team past the Holy Cross Crusaders 5-4 Sunday afternoon in a wild back-and-forth game in which the Pioneers tied the game with no time remaining on the clock in regulation.

Kasten took a flip pass in front of the goalie circle from Sarah Bergman (Blandon, PA), knocking in her first goal of the season to complete the comeback.  The OT winner was made possible thanks to a clutch game-tying goal by Kate Boyd (Nottingham, NH), her second of the game, off a penalty corner set up by Hannah Robinson (Watertown, MA) and Laura McCormick (West Windsor, NJ) on the last play of regulation.

"We didn't do a very good job executing the game plan but when it came down to it they found a way to win and that is an important quality for a team to possess," said head coach Chris Blais.

The Crusdaers took their third lead of the game to go up 4-3 at 63:53 on a goal by Jillian Caffrey off a penalty corner set up by Jamie Caniglia.  The Pioneers previously stormed back with two second-half goals to tie the game.  Bergam cut SHU's deficit to one goal by completing a two-on-one with Kasten, taking a pass from Kasten to score her third of the season at 54:32.  Robinson tied the game less than two minutes later at 56:29, taking a pass from Bergman off a rebound.

Holy Cross opened the scoring on a corner goal by Mackenzie Peet, set up by Caniglia and Kirsten Walter at 14:12.  Boyd scored her first goal of the game to tie it at 22:22, taking a pass from Kasten and faking an initial shot before knocking in a shot to the left corner of the cage.  Holy Cross took a 2-1 lead into halftime on a goal by Kelsey Horton at 30:34, tucking a shot into the left side following a pass from the top of the circle from Caniglia.  Horton scored again in the second half at 41:51, dribbling in for the goal on the right side from a lead pass from Kelly Burke.

Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) made six saves for her second victory of the year in the Pioneer cage.

Sacred Heart plays next  Sunday, September 18 at Yale at 2:00 p.m.
