West Long Branch, NJ – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team bounced back in a big way Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory at Monmouth. The Pioneers improve to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the NEC. The Pioneers desperately needed a win after a couple heartbreaking defeats last weekend.
The Pioneers got the scoring started early; Sophomore midfielder Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, NY) put one behind Monmouth goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy in the 8th minute off of a free kick from junior defender Alyssa Brandofino (East Northport, NY). Sophomore midfielder Kristin Verrette (Saugus, MA) slipped passed the defense for the second goal. Verrette scored a breakaway goal in the 71st minute to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The Hawks cut into Sacred Hearts lead in the 79th minute when Monique Plescia scored a breakaway goal. The Pioneers would hold off the Hawks in the final minutes to take home the 2-1 victory.
Sacred Heart is next in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for another NEC clash.
