Charmello and Kerski Propel SHU to Two Victories Versus Mount St. Mary's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bridgeport, CT – Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA) popped a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning of game one of a double header against Mount St. Mary's and Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) slammed the door with a complete game shutout in game two.  The Pioneers completed a four game series sweep of the Mount with winning decisions of 7-3 and 2-0 this afternoon.

Sacred Heart (7-13, 6-2 NEC) got on the board first in game one with a RBI single off the bat of Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT).  The Mount was able to tie the game in the top of the third as a SHU throwing error lead to an unearned run, SHU would escape with a win despite making four errors in the contest.  The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) was able to scamper home following a passed ball.

Mount St. Mary's (6-18, 0-8 NEC) got six innings of scoreless relief from Nick Reilly, who entered the game in the fourth inning.  The Mountaineers leveled the score at 2-2 as Mo Moriarity laced a RBI double down the left field line.  The Pioneers got out of the inning by turning a double play on the next batter.

Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) finished his day with 4.2 scoreless innings while John Hermanson (Milford, CT) tossed 5.1 innings of stellar relief, allowing just one earned run.  Both teams pushed across a run in the ninth inning by taking advantage of errors.  SHU survived and extended the game to a tenth inning on a Flint RBI single through the left side.

The bottom of the 11th started with back-to-back singles from Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) and Flint at the top of the order.  John Murphy (Seymour, CT) laid down a sacrifice bunt but the Mount tried to get Phillips a third, unsuccessfully.  Charmello, who had two other chances to end the game, left little doubt with his third attempt by clearing the bases with a grand slam over the left field wall.  Liam Rafferty (Westminster, MA) earned the victory on the mound with a scoreless 11th inning.

Kerski had to work out of a jam in the first inning of game two as a pair of Mountaineers reached with a hit, however the right hander kept the visitor's off the board.  It would also be the only inning that the Mount would get two runners on base.  Kerski went the distance and surrendered just five hits, all singles, along with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Pioneers scratched out a run in the fourth and fifth innings with Dave Boisture (Highland Hills, NY) and Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) each tallied a RBI.  Karl Lamont was the tough luck loser for Mount St. Mary's, allowing just two runs in an eight inning complete game. Kerski finished off his gem with a strikeout of Tyler Skidmore to lock up SHU's series sweep of Mount St. Mary's.

The Sacred Heart baseball team returns to action this Wednesday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for a non-conference clash with Iona.
