Limestone Takes Down Men's Volleyball, 3-1

Fairfield, CT – Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Nick Hunt (Uniondale, NY) each ripped 17 kills but the Limestone men's volleyball team was able to down Sacred Heart, 3-1, Friday night. Bradley Borsay (Richmond, RI) recorded a double-double by racking up 13 kills and ten digs. The Saints offense hit at a .352 mark while compiling 16.5 blocks.
Limestone (13-9) jumped out to an 8-3 advantage but the Pioneers rattled off three straight points, the final on a Mackenzie kill, to close the gap to 8-6. However, the Saints would never surrender the lead and finished the frame with 13 kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Scott Warren paced the Limestone attack with 15 kills while Curtis Van Grinsven totaled eight block assists. The visitors secured the opening set, 25-18, on the strength of a SHU service error.
Sacred Heart (4-18) led in the early stages of the second game and took a 15-12 edge after a block from Jason Kinney (Salem, NH) and John Lutjen (Smithtown, NY). The Pioneers posted a blistering .500 swinging mark in the set behind 19 assists from Lutjen. Hunt put up seven kills as SHU held a 22-21 advantage down the stretch. SHU closed strong and won the next three rallies, including the final on a block from Hunt and Kinney.
The two sides battled back-and-forth in the third set with neither team building more than a three point lead. Back-to-back Pioneer errors gave the Saints momentum as well as set point, 24-22. Eric Zaun supplied one of his 14 kills of the match to propel Limestone to the 25-22 triumph.
Sacred Heart built an 18-14 cushion but the fourth set would feature 15 ties and six lead changes. The Saints engineered a 9-4 run, which concluded with a block, to go on top 23-22. After the teams exchanged errors Limestone had its first match point. Derek Daley went up and recorded a solo block to end the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
The Pioneers will try and break their 11 match losing streak in an EIVA clash with Rutgers-Newark tomorrow. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
