SHU Baseball Splits Doubleheader on Final Day of Frisch Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bronx, NY – On the final day of the Frankie Frisch Invitational at Fordham University the SHU baseball team split a double header. In the first game of the double dip SHU lost 6-3 to the NJIT Highlanders but rebounded nicely to knock off the host Fordham Rams, 9-1, to salvage the split. Sacred Heart was originally supposed to play Fordham yesterday but the game was postponed due to snowy conditions. With the split, Sacred Heart's record goes to 3-8 on the seaso

In their first game of the day against NJIT, the Pioneers leapt out to a 3-0 lead but could not hold on losing to the Engineers, 6-3.  The Pioneers scored all of their runs in the fourth inning. Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) singled to right field driving in Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA) to take the 1-0 lead. Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) had the other two RBI's for the Pioneers in the fourth inning, singling up the middle to score freshmen Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ) and Gondek.  Flint went 3-5 on the day.

Momentum shifted in the seventh inning with Sacred Heart not able to sustain the lead, allowing four runs in the inning.  Sacred Heart walked three straight Rams with the bases loaded and then hit the next one allowing Fordham to tie the game and take the lead in the inning. Fordham would go on to score once more in both the eighth and ninth innings to complete the comeback victory.

Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) earned the no decision for Sacred Heart in his second start of the season, allowing just three hits in six shutout innings.  Dan Wertz secured the loss, only able to get two Rams out in the seventh inning.

Sacred Heart rebounded quite nicely in the second game of the doubleheader, knocking off Fordham, 9-1, to cap off the 2-1 weekend.

Junior Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) earned the victory for the Pioneers, allowing just three hits in six scoreless innings. Senior Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) came on in relief of Leiningen, pitching the final three innings to notch his first save of the season.

Sacred Heart got on the board early and often against the Rams, notching a season high 15 hits and a season high nine runs.  Freshmen Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ) and Jesus Medina (New York, NY) led the way for the Pioneers, both going 3-4 for at the dish. Medina's bases clearing triple in the fourth inning broke the game wide open for Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart freshmen accounted for six RBI's in the victory.

Sacred Heart hits the field this Tuesday when they travel to the University of Rhode Island to take on the Rams at 3:30 PM.
