Pioneers Walk Off in Game 2; Split Doubleheader With Bryant

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bridgeport, CT – Senior shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT) lined a two out fastball over the right fielder Daniel St. George's head in right field to score seniors Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) and Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) giving the Pioneers the walk-off 3-2 win over the Bryant Bulldogs, splitting the Saturday doubleheader. SHU dropped the first game of the day 7-2. With the split, the Pioneers improve to 17-17 on the season and 13-6 in the NEC.

Bryant starting pitcher John Healy hurled the complete game victory in the first game of the afternoon, beating Sacred Heart 7-2. Healy improved his record to an impressive 5-0 this season.

The Pioneers scored their first run of game one in the fourth inning on a sac fly by senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT).  Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) came around on the sacrifice after leading off the inning with a double down the left field line.

SHU added their second run in the seventh inning on a base hit by Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ), scoring freshman Brian Lamboy (Manalapan, NJ). SHU would strand runners on first and third to end the game.

In game two, sophomore lefty Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) pitched the complete game for the Pioneers; allowing just two runs on five hits. Stoddard has pitched five consecutive complete games and improves his record to 4-1 on the season.

After struggling for most of the game, the Pioneers finally broke through in the seventh of game two, loading the bases with just one out on a walk by pinch hitter Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY), a single by Jesus Medina (New York, NY), and a hit by pitch to Flint. An RBI fielder's choice by senior Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) would cut Bryant's lead to just one run with two outs.  After the fielder's choice a walk to Lamboy would load the bases once again, this time with two outs on senior John Muprhy coming to plate. Murphy lined a Salvatore Lisanti fastball over Bryant right fielder Daniel St. George's head to win the game for SHU, 3-2. Following the heroics, a jubilant SHU dugout mobbed Murphy in shallow center field.

SHU looks for the series win over Bryant tomorrow morning in the series finale set for 11:00 am.
