Pioneers Sweep Doubleheader at Quinnipiac

Hamden, CT – Junior Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) and sophomore Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) threw back-to-back complete game shutouts as the Sacred Heart baseball team swept a doubleheader against NEC rival Quinnipiac. The Pioneers dominated the first game 10-0 and then took game two, 4-0.  SHU improves to 7-4 in the Northeast Conference.

 

Nick Leiningen rebounded from a tough outing last weekend with one of his best games of the season, throwing a complete game shut-out, giving up only four hits in seven innings.

 

Senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT) set the tone early with a three run blast to right field in the first inning.  Sophomore Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) and freshman Brian Lamboy (Manalapan, NJ) came around on Murphy's fourth long ball of the season. SHU was not finished in the first, after Rocco Gondek was hit by a pitch, back-to-back singles by Jesus Medina and Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) drove in Dan Perez and Gondek to give Sacred Heart a 5-0 lead. 

 

Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) launched SHU's second homerun of the day, another three run blast. Gondek crushed a hanging curveball over the left field wall to stretch the Pioneers lead to 9-0 in the fourth inning.

 

Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) capped the onslaught in the sixth with a solo blast to right center, making it 10-0 Sacred Heart. Boisture went 5 for 7 in the two games with four runs scored.

 

Jeff Stoddard took the ball in game two and also went the distance, scattering nine hits in a complete game seven-inning shutout.

 

The Pioneers would again in the top of the first with Murphy singling up the middle to get the scoring started, scoring lead-off hitter Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY). Murphy went 3 for 7 with 4 RBI on the say. Also in the first, Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) singled through the right side to score Dave Boisture and Dan Perez (Seymour, CT), staking Stoddard the early 3-0 lead.

 

Sacred Heart would add another run in the seventh on a Perez single to center, scoring freshman Lamboy.

Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac get together again tomorrow afternoon for the series finale starting at 1:00 pm.
