Pioneers Take Two Against Niagara

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bridgeport, CT – The Sacred Heart baseball team swept the Niagara Purple Eagles Thursday afternoon, 18-2 and 5-1, in an afternoon doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.  Sacred Heart has now won 11 straight games (1 shy of the program record) and improves to 31-21 this season.

SHU trounced the Purple Eagles in game one, scoring 14 runs in the first four innings en route to an 18-2 beating.

Freshman Jesus Medina (New York, NY), sophomore Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY), and freshman Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) all had two hits and 3 RBI in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior John Murphy also had a couple hits to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior catcher Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Sophomore left-hander Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) once again pitched well for the Pioneers, notching his NEC leading eighth win of the season. Stoddard let up just two hits in seven innings of work without allowing an earned run.

Freshman Mike Lembo (North Haledon, NJ) tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Stoddard, striking out four Purple Eagles.

In game two, the Pioneers had another impressive pitching performance, this time from freshman Connor Landers (Durham, CT). The big rookie right-hander earned his first win as a Pioneer, allowing just one run in six innings of work.

Sophomore Matt Charmello put the Pioneers on the board in the second inning, smacking a one out two run triple down the right field line, scoring Sullivan and freshman Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ).

Fellow freshman Sullivan picked up right where he left off in game one, going 3 for 3 in game two with a run scored. The freshman right fielder went 5 for 7 in the two games with 3 RBI and two runs scored.  Murphy also had a nice game two, going 2 for 3. The senior shortstop is now just 10 hits shy of the all-time Sacred Heart hits record.

SHU and Niagara complete their three game set tomorrow afternoon at noon.
