Scribner Pitches Pioneers to Round Two of NEC Tournament

Box Score

Lakewood, NJ– For the third year in a row, senior Troy Scribner opens the NEC Championship with a complete game victory, this time a 7-1 win over the third seeded Monmouth Hawks at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey. Sacred Heart gets their 33rd win of the season and advances to take on LIU Brooklyn Friday afternoon at 3:30.

Senior Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) was once again masterful for the Pioneers, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out ten Hawks en route to the complete game victory. Besides the run in the second, Scribner was terrific throughout, retiring 12 straight at one point.  Scribner is now 4-0 in his career in the NEC Tournament.

Senior Andrew McGee earned the loss for Monmouth, allowing six earned runs in eight innings of work.

Monmouth got on the board first, taking the 1-0 lead in the second inning. Shortstop John Guida knocked a base hit through the left side to score third baseman Ian Stewart.

Pioneers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs to stake Scribner the 5-1 lead.  Hits by Jesus Medina (Charlton, NY), Dan Perez (Seymour, CT), and Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) loaded the bases with no outs for senior Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT). Gondek was hit by a McGee fastball to score Medina for SHU's first run of the game.  Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) followed Gondek with an RBI fielder's choice to give SHU the 2-1 lead. Senior Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) chopped one over second base for an infield hit to allow Sullivan to score SHU's third run. A botched double play attempt would allow Servilla to score, making it 4-1 SHU. Monmouth shortstop Jon Guida spiked a throw from second to first, which extended the inning and allowed Servilla to score. Senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT) nailed a two out base hit to left field to give SHU the 5-1 lead.

SHU would add to their lead in the eighth inning. Gondek crushed a first pitch fastball over the left field wall to give Sacred Heart the 7-1 lead.  Perez was on first base after getting hit by a pitch.

Sacred Heart has won their opening game in four straight NEC Championships.

First pitch between LIU Brooklyn and Sacred Heart is set for 3:30 Friday afternoon. We will once again have the call on the Pioneer Sports Network.
