PHILADELPHIA – The Sacred Heart men's soccer team had its current winning streak snapped on Sunday, losing 5-0 to the Penn Quakers at Penn Park in Philadelphia.
Penn (2-0) got on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the match, as Louis Schott one-touched a Sacred Heart (2-3) clearance past goalkeeper Dylan Strachan (Fairfield, Conn.) to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers had opportunities to level the match in the 20th minute on a Kieran Walsh (River Vale, N.J.) shot from 25 yards out, and in the 23rd minute on a Jamal Vinson (Teaneck, N.J.) header, but both shots were wide of goal. The Quakers extended their lead in the 26th minute when San Eng found an Alex Reddy cross at his feet, knocking a low shot into the net to make the score 2-0. Penn scored its third goal in the 40th minute. Alec Neurmann blocked a clearance by Strachan and guided the ball into a wide open net.
Sacred Heart had three corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but couldn't get a shot on target. Ronaldo Vieira (Farmington, Mass.) had a chance to get the Pioneers on the board in the 71st minute but his shot was stopped by Penn goalkeeper Tyler Kinn. Penn tacked on two goals late in the half to make the final score 5-0.
Each team had 13 shots in the match. Strachan made three saves for the Pioneers as Kinn had two for the clean sheet. Vinson led Sacred Heart with four shots, as Walsh added three.
Sacred Heart will take on another Ivy League opponent on Tuesday, Sept. 10 when the Pioneers host Yale at Campus Field. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
