Pioneers Play St. Michael's to 0-0 Draw

Burlington, VT – In game one of the St. Michael's Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic, the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team tied the host Purple Knights, 0-0, Friday night at Cairns Arena. The Pioneers are 0-4-4 in their last eight games, and 3-7-4 on the season.

Sacred Heart Senior goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) denied 31 St. Michael's shots to record her first shutout of the season.

The Pioneers outshot St. Michael's 37-31 but could not get the puck past goaltender Tina Frasca. SHU had several chances in the final seconds of regulation but Frasca made a few clutch saves to send the game into overtime. Junior Alanna Woodford (Scituate, MA) had a promising chance in the closing seconds but was denied by Frasca. Sacred Heart outshot SMC 4-3 in the extra frame.

Junior Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) led the Pioneers with seven shots on goal.

Sacred Heart will play Plymouth State in the second game of the Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic tomorrow afternoon in Burlington.
