SHU Women's Soccer Moves To 1-1 In NEC After 3-1 Loss At LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team had its three-match winning streak snapped on Friday, falling to the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds 3-1 at LIU Field.
Sacred Heart (6-6-1, 1-1 NEC) scored first Friday afternoon, as Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) took a loose ball and scored in the 11th minute, putting the Pioneers ahead 1-0 on just their second shot of the game and first on goal. Four minutes after scoring her 11th goal of the season, Verrette nearly had her 12th but LIU Brooklyn goalkeeper Jessica Montrose made a save. The Blackbirds tied the game in the 17th minute as Sydney Ciufo knocked in the rebound of a Jen Spicer shot that hit the post, making the score 1-1. The Pioneers outshot the Blackbirds 5-2 after the tying goal, putting two shots on goal. Chandler Antczak (Kendall Park, N.J.) had a shot saved in the 23rd minute as Montrose also stopped a Verrette attempt in the 40th minute. Marissa Christy (Massapequa, N.Y.) also hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute.
Sacred Heart nearly leveled the game in the 62nd minute as a Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, Conn.) shot was stopped by Montrose. Christy also had a shot saved in the 70th minute. LIU Brooklyn (3-10, 1-1 NEC) broke the tie in the 72nd minute as Madison Gomez headed in a cross from Brittany Galske. The Blackbirds tacked on another goal in the 76th minute to extend their lead to 3-1. Sacred Heart had one more shot on goal in the game as LIU Brooklyn hung on to win 3-1.
The Pioneers outshot the Blackbirds 14-8, putting eight shots on goal to LIU's three.
Sacred Heart returns to Campus Field on Sunday, Oct. 12 for a 12 p.m. game against Saint Francis U.
