Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. – Led by a career-high two goals from Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) and 39 saves from Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.), the Sacred Heart men's hockey team defeated the Army Black Knights 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Tate Rink.
Just like Friday night, both Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) for Sacred Heart (1-1-0, 1-1-0 AHA) and Parker Gahagen for Army were stalwart in goal in the first period. While the Black Knights outshot the Pioneers 15-11, neither goalie allowed a score heading into the second period.
The Pioneers got on the scoresheet 3:33 into the second period as Kory Kennedy (Midhurst, Ont.) fed Zach Luczyk (Charlton, Mass.) for his first career goal. At the 5:46 mark, Sacred Heart went on the power play as Army's Christian Pomarico was called for hooking. Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) scored less than a minute into the man advantage, getting assists from Luczyk and Spencer Graboski (Quesnel, B.C.) to give Sacred Heart a 2-0 advantage. Lake extended the lead to 3-0 at 8:44, firing home a Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) pass. Sacred Heart outshot Army 13-10 in the second period, going 1-for-4 on the power play.
Army (1-1-0, 1-1-0 AHA) got back in the game at 10:40 of the third period as Tyler Pham ended the shutout, sending a Blake Box pass into the net to make the score 3-1. The Black Knights then went on the power play with eight minute remaining as Kennedy was called for hooking. The Pioneers not only killed the penalty, but scored a shorthanded goal. Lake tallied the goal at 12:31, his second of the game, with an assist from Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ont.). Sacred Heart tacked on another goal at 17:10, as Graboski scored his first of the season. Connor Doherty (Holden, Mass.) and Alec Butcher (Anchorage, Alaska) each assisted on the goal to earn their first career points as Pioneers.
The Black Knights outshot Sacred Heart 40-36, but Vazzano made 39 saves for the Pioneers. Gahagen had 31 stops for Army. Sacred Heart went 1-for-6 on the power play and held Army scoreless on six extra man chances. In two games this weekend, the Pioneers were 9-for-9 on the penalty kill.
Sacred Heart opens its home schedule on Friday, Oct. 17 against Bentley at 7:05 at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
