Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team and the #4/4 Colgate Raiders skated to a 2-2 tie after two periods Friday night at Milford Ice Pavilion, but a dominant third period from the nationally-ranked visitors lifted Colgate to a 5-2 win.
Colgate (4-1-0) scored less than four minutes into the game when Tyson Spink finished off a Spiro Goulakos rush with a power play goal at 3:52. Less than five minutes later, Sacred Heart (2-3-0) tied the game. Zach Luczyk (Charlton, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season at 8:23, taking a Zach Sabatini (Johns Creek, Ga.) pass at center ice and skating right past the Colgate defense and firing a shot right through the legs of Charlie Finn to make the score 1-1. Defenseman Tyler Shaw (Sudbury, Ont.) also got an assist on the first Pioneer tally, blocking a shot that led to the breakaway. Each team had nine shots and one goal in the opening period.
The Raiders broke the tie at 5:14 of the second period. Kyle Baun took a faceoff win from Mike Borkowski and scored right past the outstretched glove of Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.), making the score 2-1. Once again, the Pioneers leveled. Ben Lake (Calgary, Alberta) took an Alec Butcher (Anchorage, Alaska) pass in the slot and shot right under Finn's glove, tying the game 2-2 at 13:33 of the period. Sacred Heart outshot Colgate 12-10 in the second period, and had a chance to take the lead with 3:47 to play when Darcy Murphy was called for boarding. The Pioneers had three shots on the power play but didn't score, leading to a 2-2 score at the second intermission.
Colgate dominated the third period, holding Sacred Heart to one shot on goal. The Raiders scored their second power play goal of the night 3:39 into the period as Tim Harrison deflected in a Goulakos shot from the point, making the score 3-2. Colgate tacked on another power play goal at 11:41 when John Lidgett snuck in for a backdoor goal, getting a pass from Goulakos for the defenseman's third assist of the game. Evan Peterson added an empty-netter in the final two minutes.
Sacred Heart was outshot 28-22 for the game, as Colgate went 3-for-5 on the power play. Vazzano made 23 saves for the Pioneers as Finn had 20 for the Raiders.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series with a 3:05 p.m. matinee Saturday afternoon.
