Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – For the second straight game, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team hung with the #4/4 Colgate Raiders, but Colgate broke a 2-2 tie with a goal with 2:11 to play and winning the game by a score of 4-2.
Colgate (5-1-0) needed just 30 seconds to score the opening goal. Darcy Murphy guided a Jake Kulevich pass past Sacred Heart goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) to make the score 1-0. Despite getting outshot 12-4 in the opening period, the Pioneers tied the game with 4:14 remaining. Drew George (Regina, Sask.) finished off a Sacred Heart breakaway with his second goal of the season, with assists from Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.) and Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.).
Sacred Heart (2-4-0), once again, withstood a barrage of Raiders shots in the second period. Bodnarchuk stopped the first 13 shots he faced in the period. However, with two seconds remaining in the period and Colgate on the power play, the Raiders broke the tie. Tim Harrison knocked home the rebound of a John Lidgett shot right out of the air and into the net to give Colgate a 2-1 lead. The goal was initially waved off, but the officials' replay showed Harrison's stick below the crossbar for a good goal.
The Pioneers tied the game 2-2 1:51 into the final period. Spencer Graboski (Quesnel, B.C.) deflected a shot from Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, Pa.) right past Colgate goaltender Charlie Finn to even the contest. Sacred Heart came close to taking the lead with 10:00 to go when George rang a shot off the crossbar. With 2:11 to play, Harrison put the Raiders in the lead for good. Joe Wilson found Harrison right at the goalpost for the go-ahead goal. Colgate added an empty-netter one minute later to make the final score 4-2.
Colgate outshot Sacred Heart 38-12 for the game. Bodnarchuk made 34 saves in his season debut as Finn needed to stop just 10 shots. Colgate was 1-for-4 on the power play with the Pioneers unable to score on three power play opportunities.
Sacred Heart closes out its current three-game homestand on Friday, Oct. 31 with the beginning of a home-and-home Atlantic Hockey series with Holy Cross. The Pioneers and Crusaders face off at 7:05 p.m.
