Lauren Harrison scored her fourth goal of the year as the Sacred Heart University field hockey team fell to Maine 3-1 at Vermont on Saturday afternoon.
SHU (5-6) had the first opportunity of the game as Liz Bergman sent a shot from a penalty corner wide in the ninth minute. Less than three minute later Maine (5-6) got on the board with their first shot of the game as Annabelle Hamilton scored off of a direct shot from a penalty corner. The Black Bears made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when Danielle Aviani beat Sacred Heart goalkeeper Mary Altepeter.
The Pioneers came close to cutting the deficit in half in the 20th minute on another Bergman shot from a penalty corner, but Maine goalkeeper Emily Corbett held strong in net to preserve the lead. The game was moments away from a 2-0 halftime score when the Black Bears scored a goal three seconds from the break. Holly Stewart received a long pass from Becca Paradee and beat Altepeter one-on-one to take a 3-0 lead into the half.
Harrison attempted to spark a SHU comeback in the 41st when she scored into an empty net after Corbett misplayed the ball to cut the deficit to 3-1 but the Pioneers would only manage one more shot on net the rest of the contest.
The Black Bears outshot Sacred Heart 13-6 for the game and had a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Altepeter stopped five shots in defeat, while Corbett only needed to record two saves for the victory.
SHU will stay in Burlington to face Vermont tomorrow at 1 pm. Maine defeated the Catamounts 5-1 on Friday. Fans can watch the game here.
