FAIRFIELD, CONN. (November 18, 2014)—Hannah Kimmel (Harpursville, N.Y.) led a strong Pioneer offense posting her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Sacred Heart women's basketball team downed the University of Bridgeport 84-41 in Tuesday night's home-opener. Four Pioneers reached over 13 points as SHU improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Purple Knights landed the first basket of the game, but Kimmel was quick to respond pushing her way through the defense for a layup. Moments later, Alissa Tarsi (Clinton, N.J.), who tallied a career-high 13 points, knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Pioneers the lead as part of a 15-4 run.
SHU never looked back from there, dominating the floor, shooting 50% (15-30) in the first half. By the halftime buzzer, Sacred Heart held a 48-23 lead over Bridgeport. Adaysha Williams (LaCrosse, Wis.) was near perfect in the first half, shooting 83.3% (5-6) from the floor for 10 points.
The Pioneers defense allowed just 18 points into the second half. Throughout the game, they forced Bridgeport into 21 turnovers.
Shelby Hickey (Littleton, Colo.) spent her night cleaning up the boards. The sophomore pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds. Rookie Tykera Carter (Alexandria, Va.) went 4-6 from downtown totaling a career-high 14 points. Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) flirted with a double-double combining nine assists with seven rebounds.
Tiara Aziz led the Purple Knights with nine points.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday on the road against the University of Maine at 1:00 p.m.
