Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart University men's basketball returns home for a double header with the women. The Pioneers will host the Campbell Camels for a 3:30 PM tip.
Last Time Out... The Sacred Heart University men's basketball cut a 21-point first-half deficit to five points, three times in the second-half, but could get no closer, falling 79-72 to host James Madison University on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers fell behind 21, 36-15 with 4:41 to play in the first-half, but outscored the Dukes 57- 43 the remainder of the contest. SHU forced 13 second-half JMU turnovers, coming away with seven of 10 steals following the intermission. SHU would be within five points twice in the final 98 seconds, but could not get any closer. Cane Broome led four Pioneers in double figures, scoring 15 points and collecting a game-high eight rebounds. De'von Barnett had 14 points, while Phil Gaetano added 13 and Steve Glowiak added 11 off of the bench. Gaetano was 4-6-from behind the arc and handed out four assists. SHU shot 40.3 percent from the field for the game, hitting 9-27 from behind the arc, but going just 13-23 from the free throw line. The Pioneers finished with 16 assists against 12 turnovers.
Series History... For the third consecutive game, Sacred Heart will be meeting its opponent for the first time ever.
All-Time vs. Big South... This will be just the second time ever that Sacred Heart matches up against a Big South opponent. They fell to Radford, 94-78, last season in the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic on December 22.
Scouting Campbell... The Camels come into today's contest with a 1-3 record, losing three straight after their season opening win over Barber Scotia. They scored 65 points per game on 44.8 percent shooting. Campbell struggles from free throw line, shooting 50.7 percent on the season. They are allowing 72.2 points per game as opponents are shooting 47.8 percent against them. The Camels are only outrebounded by .5 per
game and are averaging 15.2 assists, while only turning the ball over 13.5 times per game. Individually, the Camel average in double digits, led by D.J. Mason at 14 per game. Kyre Hamer and Andrew Ryan chip in at 12.3 and 10.2 per game, respectively. Harmer is also the leading rebounder at 6.3 per contest. Ryan averages two 3 pt FG on 50 percent shooting from behind the line. Quinton Ray is the leading assist man dishing out an average of 4 per game.
Similar Opponent... Both Sacred Heart and Campbell have played against Ohio State this season. The Pioneers lost 106-48 on November 23, while the Camels fell to the Buckeyes 91-64 three days later on November 26.
Crashing the Boards... SHU ranks second in the NEC in both rebounds per game (37.2) and rebounding margin (+1.0). That being said, the leading rebounder on the team, Tevin Falzon (5.3), ranks only 15th in individually in the conference. The Pioneers have six averaging at least 4 per game.
Double Digit Scorers... SHU had four players score in double digits for the first time this year on Wednesday. Cane Broome, De'von Barnett, Phil Gaetano, and Steve Glowiak all reached at least 11. Barnett is the only Pioneer averaging double digits on the year at 10.5 per game.
Defensive Struggles... SHU is 0-25 over the last two seasons when opponents shoot better than forty percent. After holding its two first opponents to under forty percent shooting, the last two opponents have scored 106 and 79, as both have shot at least fifty percent. Allowing 73.8 points per game, Sacred Heart ranks ninth in the NEC.
Failing to Lead... The Pioneers have not held a lead in each of the past two games. In 2013-14, that only happened three times throughout the entire season.
Failing to find the Range... Sacred Heart ranks eighth in the NEC in both 3 pt FG per game (5.0) and 3 pt FG percentage (.267). Sacred Heart made just 1 three-pointer in its season opener, followed by two in its home opener. The two games without at least three 3-pointers already surpasses its total of one game without at least three 3-pointers in 2013-14.
Happy to be home?... The Pioneers are 1-15 in their last 16 games in the William H. Pitt Center. Last year, SHU was 1-10 at home with the lone win coming on January 11, as they defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 71-67.
Losing as of Late... Sacred Heart is 2-17 in their last 19 games
