NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Kristin Verrette's (Saugus, Mass.) penalty kick goal in the 88th minute forced overtime Sunday against the WKU Lady Toppers in the Yale Classic at Reese Stadium, but WKU scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute for a 2-1 win.
Sacred Heart (3-4-1) controlled possession early, putting the first shot on goal in the fifth minute. Jacquelyn Roth (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finished off a Pioneer run into the WKU end by firing a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was stopped by Allison Leone. In the 20th minute, Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, Conn.) got free but put a shot wide of the goal. The Lady Toppers best offensive chance of the first half came in the 22nd minute when Kelly Phipps made a long run into the Sacred Heart end and played a cross into the box. Jillian Picinich (Bellmore, N.Y.) cleared the cross to end the WKU threat.
The Pioneers had their second shot on goal in the 29th minute when Emily Dawidczyk (Oxford, Mass.) took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that one-hopped right to Leone. WKU had their first shot of the game in the 37th minute when Christine Gordon put a Phipps cross wide of the goal. The Lady Toppers had one more shot in the half with five minutes remaining as Hannah Chua also put an attempt on goal wide, keeping the game scoreless into halftime.
Sacred Heart had eight shots in the first 30 minutes of the second half, but couldn't get one past Leone. In the 58th minute, Marissa Christy (Massapequa, N.Y.) fired a high shot that Leone knocked over the crossbar. Cosmedy had a shot inside the box saved by Leone one minute later. In the 73rd minute Verrette took a throughball from Cosmedy and forced Leone to make a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
WKU (4-2) had their first shot of the second half, and first on goal for the game, in the 75th minute when Sarah Gorham's shot off of a corner was stopped by Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.). Four minutes later, Caitlin Hesse almost put the Lady Toppers on the board when her shot hit the crossbar. WKU broke through in the 86th minute when Iris Dunn converted a penalty kick to make the score 1-0. Less than two minutes later, Elisa Robiglio (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was fouled in the box to give Sacred Heart a penalty kick. Verrette stepped up to the spot and hammered home the equalizer, making the score 1-1 with 2:36 to play. The senior almost won the game in the final minute of regulation, but her long shot was saved by Leone who knocked it over the crossbar.
The Pioneers had the first shot of overtime as Robiglio sent a shot wide in the first minute of extra time. In the 96th minute, WKU's Haley Baldrige won the ball off a goal kick and played it to Lauren Moats. Moats then made a run into the box and chipped a shot over Schwartz and into the net, giving the Lady Toppers' a 2-1 win.
Sacred Heart outshot WKU 19-6 for the game, and 14-3 in the second half. Schwartz made just one save while Leone had 11 for the Lady Toppers.
The Pioneers return to Campus Field on Sunday, September 21 for a 12 p.m. game against Hartford.
