PITTSBURGH, PA (September 20, 2014)—The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses to Pittsburgh and South Florida on day two of the Pittsburgh Panther Classic Saturday. Sophomore libero Ana Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 4.08 digs per set throughout three matches.
Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) had her second solid game of the Pittsburgh Panther Classic Saturday afternoon, tallying 12 kills while hitting .320 as the Pioneers fell in three straight (17-25, 21-25, 17-25) sets to the host Panthers.
The Pioneers got their only lead of the match early in the opening set. After the teams exchanged points, a kill from Makayla Dole (Cypress, Calif.) tied the game at seven, and a Panther attack error gave SHU a one-point lead. But Pitt answered with three-straight points to retake the lead.
Sacred Heart struggled against South Florida in the day's later match. Errors plagued the Pioneers throughout as they couldn't get an edge over the tough Bulls team. Despite the Pioneers' offensive struggles, sophomore Jene Lee (San Dimas, Calif.) posted an errorless match converting six of her 10 attacks for kills.
After dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16, the Pioneers came out fighting in the third set taking an early lead. But the Bulls rallied back behind Amy van Sant's serving to reclaim the lead 9-8. Sacred Heart kept pace with USF, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls clinched the match with the 25-21 win.
The Pioneers open Northeast Conference play next weekend making the long trip to Saint Francis U on Saturday and facing the Robert Morris Colonials on Sunday.
